Red Tide on TX Coast and Remembering Antonelli’s +Jen’s Weekly !LIVE! Music Calendar!

Hi Friends!

Good news and bad. Bad: Red tide along 20 miles of TX Gulf Coast including portions of SurfsideQuintana and Galveston have been affected – over 1,000,000 fish have died (primarily the bait fish: manhaden). Texas Parks and Wildlife posted this yesterday about the current status of the affected coastal regions. While gathering information about Red Tide along the Gulf I came upon an enlightening article that included pics of Red Tide at night. The Web Ecoist article asks: can you see Red Tide at night? The answer is YES but it’s not red…it’s blue! Fluorescent, glowing blue!

One look at these pictures and it dawned on me that if what we always labeled as phosphorous in the Gulf could have, at times, been Red Tide? If anyone has an answer or opinion about that, please leave some comments. I think I’ll take a trip to Quintana tonight to check it out and see if there’s any blue tide to be found. I haven’t seen luminous water in many years but I remember how spectacular it was. I’ll take the camera and let you know what I find.
BTW: During Red Tide – None of this (or other shellfish…sorry…that means shrimp too) should be consumed if it’s from the Gulf -
!DANGER!
Never a dull moment on the Brazos is there?! Lots going on in the music scene, too. A few weeks ago, Pachomp! caught Bo Counts Band at Belles Landing – see what she has to say about Bo and his talented band – especially the ladies. Bo Counts Band will be back at Belles Landing this Saturday. It seems every time Bo and the band play at Belles there’s lots of positive comments about their ability to get people on their feet!
       Pachomp!
Saturday night, we saw Bo Counts Band at Belle’s Landing.  Belle’s was about half-packed, but I blame the mosquitoes for that because I’ve seen this band pack in a crowd here before. Bo Counts (vocals, guitar), has an eye for very talented band members. I applaud him for being able to sit back for a few songs and let the band play their best. Not every front man would agree to showcase their band members as much as Bo, but he made a great choice by putting Dustin Black, bass player/vocals, and Stephanie Jansky-Miller, fiddle/vocals, on the mic for a few songs.  Stephanie’s got some pipes!  The highlight of my night was when Stephanie paired up with Casey Duval, vocals/tambourine, to sing Pistol Annie’s “Hell on Heels” because that’s my theme song!  Don’t ya know?!
I’d like to thank the band members that took a minute to talk with me.  Also, thank you, thank you, thank you, to all the talented ladies that blew me away this weekend!  You make me wish I would have picked up an instrument when I was younger, then maybe I could have been lucky enough to be in Bo Counts Band.  ;)

Hi Friends!
Thank you Sam Sliva for letting me share your picture taken at the Freeport Marina on Thursday. Check out Austin musician, Sam Sliva’s Brazos bounty…not a bad day at sea! Be sure and catch Sam Sliva and the Good at the Summertime Bike and Blues Fest in Freeport, TX, September 1st. . Sam’s music is an original blend of reggae, Americana, and alternative styles. Sam’s vocals are the perfect compliment to his catchy compositions; his timing and pitch are dead-on and the band is tight. I caught them at The Venue in 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be in attendance for Sam’s show at Summertime Bike and Blues Fest. You can follow Sam Sliva and the Good on Facebook also. In addition to Freeport, their current performance schedule includes: Austin, Albuquerque, Bay City, El Paso, Houston, and New Braunfels.

What a pleasant surprise it was for those who went to Belles Landing this weekend to hear Alzane Kountry! Our trusty patron saint of music - Pachomp! – was one of those lucky ones and here’s what she had to say…and you can bet I’ll be there next time Alzane Kountry is!
Pachomp!
I planned on seeing Ron Shumate play some country music at Neon Moon Saturday night, but I showed up and found out that I missed him by a day.  :(   I’m trying not to go to Belle’s Landing for every band I tell you about, but it’s closest to home and they never fail on having live music, so get over it. ;) So anyways… I ended up back at Belle’s and I was in for a little surprise named Little Joe.  Little Joe is the lead guitarist for country music (and a little bit of everything else) band, Alzane Kountry.  I thought it was pretty cool that an adult band had a little dude playing lead, but, I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much out of him.  So then I was impressed when he played B. B. King’s “The Thrill is Gone” while Albert Reyes, bass, took on the lyrics.  Albert has a great voice for the blues!  But, then, I was BLOWN AWAY when Little Joe played and sang Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” as though he isn’t a 14 year old kid that is just on his summer break.  He was rewarded with rising applause from the the entire crowd.  As for the rest of the band, they were good from what I could tell.  I think there may have been some technical difficulties with the sound when lead singer, Alzane Reyes, sang with the band because there was a lot of feedback and it was tough to hear his voice and the rest of the band, but it only happened on the songs he sang.  That is reason #2 why I would like to see them again.  I have never seen Belle’s as packed as it was Saturday night and, even with a little sound feedback, Alzane Kountry kept the dance floor full of two steppers, line dancers, and even head bobbers with every song.  P. S.  Little Joe is reason #1.

Jen’s Weekly !LIVE! Music Candar Thursday Aug 2 thru Sunday Aug 5

Hi Friends!
I’m writing from Silver Spring, MD where I’m happily indulging one of my passions: Turkish Romany Dance with my friend/teacher Artemis Mourat. I’m surrounded by interesting women from all over the world: China, Canada, Turkey and the US. We all have one thing in common: an intense love for Turkish music and dance. It’s an experience that truly lends itself to the addage that art brings people together and creates an unbreakable bond. We share something that bridges all gaps and we share physically and spiritually.  It’s just like  the good times you’ll have with  friends this weekend, sharing good times with great music and good food!
Enjoy another fabulous recipe from chef Kevin Keith Burns. Anything that’s caught in water – Kevin makes it delicous! And I’m happy to say, he’s a very enthusiastic community supporter and contributor to the blog and I’d like to take a moment to thank Kevin for his support and kindness and of course…the great recipes! Thank you Kevin!
Kevin’s Kingfish Roll UpsThe best ever kingfish recipe that I have ever created is :

Take a bottle of Italian Dressing, raspberry walnut vinagarette dressing (about a cup of each) , 1/4 cup of maraschino cherry juice, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, I tablespoon of creole seasoning, 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Allow this to soak overnight in a ziplock in the fridge.
Take a package of bacon ( I like a thicker cut maple flavor bacon) , cut the package in half. Take 1/2 slice and fan it out with a butter knife – flattening the slice out. Take a chunk of the marinated kingfish and place it down on the bacon. Take either a sliver of pickled jalepeno, red onion, or even banana pepper on top of the kingfish and then roll up the fish and veggie with the bacon. Stab it with either a toothpick or longer wooden skewer. On the skewer you can put at least 5 or 6 roll ups. Once you have made all of your roll ups, sprinkle them with creole seasoning. Place on your BBQ pit and smoke until the bacon is browned and done. Best kingfish that I have ever eaten. I made these at one of my beach bash gatherings and everyone who had them said they couldn’t believe it was kingfish. Kingfish usually has a strong, oily taste to it. Not this recipe. They were eating these roll ups like they were candy !

And another on the scene shot and band review from our beloved Pachomp! Electic Soul recently. They play at Pier 30 every first Friday of each month.

Pachomp’s review of Electric Soul Band:
This past weekend didn’t disappoint on the live music front!  I caught some classic rock by the Electric Soul Band out at Pier 30 on Friday night.  The unique thing about this band is that the lead singer, JoAnn Santana, is female, but that doesn’t limit their set list to only female rock songs, like you would think.  Her voice was is edgy enough to kill an a cappella version of Janis Joplin’s ”Me and Bobby McGee” and, also, ranges low enough to nail “Can’t You See” by Marshall Tucker Band.  I really enjoy that a female voice is taking on songs that girl’s aren’t meant to sing.  Way to go, JoAnn!  The place was packed with young and old alike and everybody was singing along by the last set.
 Thank you Pachomp! You Rock!

Jen’s Weekly !LIVE! Music Calendar + Praline/Bacon Dish from Bobby Scantlin

Hi Friends! Is there anyone out there who would disagree: there’s only ONE good thing that could result from the incredible amount of mosquitoes we’ve been plagued with for the last few weeks:  A FESTIVAL! Obviosly we can’t beat ‘em, so lets join ‘em…heck, let’s even celebrate ‘em! This year we’re doing it in style – check out the entire Mosquito Festival schedule here and for quick, easy reference, download this calendar to any smart phone by clicking the ical option for the calendar (Right screen sidebar). OR There’s a smart phone Jen on the Brazos app for android and thousands of additional OS (iPhone available SOON!). Go to your app store: Travel/Local/Jen on the Brazos – there’s a nifty restaurant guide and watch for ‘special deals’ from restaurants, clubs, etc. This app has only been out for a few days – if you experience any problems, please let me know – thanks!
Recipe of the Week From Special Contributor: Bobby Scantlin
Thanks for the humorous commentary…your affinity for syrup reminds of a scene from “To Kill a Mockingbird” where a lunch guest named Walter Cunningham pours copious amounts of syrup over his entire plate and freaks Scout and Jem out completely!

Walter Cunningham eyes the pitcher of syrup in a  famous scene from  “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
When I was a kid I would do anything to keep my syrup from getting on my bacon. My dad use to say ‘quit being silly’ . I would even insist on having two forks (licking the syrup off wasn’t even good enough) and again my Dad would ‘say quit being silly’. Over the years I have acquired a taste for many things I didn’t like as a kid, you know, things like squash, brussel sprouts , sardines, even anchovies and hot peppers. Somewhere along the line it became OK to get a little syrup on my bacon, sausage or ham, even on beef, pork or chicken (still not fish). Now I purposely put syrup on my bacon in large quantities! This recipe reminds me of that. The first time I made pralines I didn’t have a candy thermometer so I tried getting this mixture to the “soft ball” stage just from reading about how to do it. I don’t recommend this method. They turned out so hard my Great Pyrenees JoJo couldn’t bite through them.
1. One and one half cups of plain old granulated sugar
2. One and one half cups of light brown sugar packed
3. Three quarters of a cup of buttermilk
4. One heaping teaspoon of vanilla extract
5. One six ounce package of pecan pieces
6. Eight slices of bacon cooked crisp but not hard
Put the sugars in a heavy pot pour in the butter milk and commence to stirring with a wooden spoon. Once you get it dissolved stay with it until it starts to boil. Adjust the temperature to maintain a good boil and you can cut back on the stirring. Insert your candy thermometer and continue to boil stirring every now and then. When the temperature reaches 234deg to 236deg remove from heat and let it sit for a few minutes. Add the pecans and bacon and the vanilla. Keep stirring until the mixture starts to get thick. Put mixture on to a buttered cookie sheet or wax paper , let them sit for about fifteen to twenty minutes. If you try to eat them too soon you won’t be able to taste them because of the seared flesh in your mouth. WARNING : always wear a shirt and shoes while frying bacon and making pralines.

Fish, BBQ, Fried Chicken, Gumbo, Cornbread on the Brazos!

Hi Friends!

Looks like we’ve got some new talent on the scene this week. Take a look at the calendar and let me know if you see some new names there alongside our local faves.I’d love to hear from you – who have you gone to listen to lately – what’d ya think? Snap a few photos and send me your thoughts – let’s spread the good news about good times on the Brazos! Been to a great restaurant lately? Let me know. I’d love to share some good Brazos recipes! BBQ, Fish, Cajun, Mexican, Birds, Anything from the Gulf, Sweets, Snacks and Veggies! If I’ve left anything out – throw it in! Drop me a line at jen@jenthemusicmaven.com, or inbox me on Facebook with your favorite recipe- send a pic too! I’ll share your tasty dishes with all!

Let’s share the good news about good times*people*food*music on the Brazos!
I’ve been spending a ton of time on Instagram lately. I’m captivated by the variety of subjects and techniques people are utilizing to create some seriously interesting art with their cell phones. Like our beloved Pachomp!   She captured some pictures of The Mighty Orq last weekend at Belles Landing. They’re not photos meant to record a specific event as much as they are representations of the soul of the artist…the other worldliness that often accompanies great talent like Orq’s...simultaneously elusive and intense…so cool, he’s hot!
Another groovy job, Pachomp!

I LOVE THIS ONE – it looks like a painting!
