Charles Farmer and Friends!

The dog days of summer…those last hot, sticky days of summer that are so unbearable legend has it they drove dogs mad, and made people hysterical. Obviously whoever labeled them a ‘legend’ had never been to the Texas Gulf Coast! As the dog days roll on, I’m gonna try to keep my sanity, stop George from howling at the moon, and chill with my friendsJ Even ol’ Spot likes to chill with the friends I’m introducing you to today.
I know just how he feels!!
If you’re not acquainted with any members of the Farmer clan from Freeport…where the heck are you from?! There’s Farmers, Days, Cades, Picards, and Coufals…you just gotta know someone with one of those last names! Well…Charles Farmer (oldest son of OC and Mary Lou Day Farmer) has been entertaining the lucky folks in Brazoria County for a loooong time…Morning Sky, Ten Cent Koke, the Amazing Heartattacks, just to name a few of the bands Charles has entertained us with over the years. Charles is usually billed as “Charles Farmer and Friends” – you never know who might be gigging with Charles but one thing’s for sure…there’ll be lots of friends there and you’ll always have a good time. I saw Charles and Friends (Andrew Farmer, Mark Pepper, Richard Edwards) twice last weekend at The Venue in Freeport and at Beach Bait and Tackle in Surfside. I could describe how unique each performance was but I’ll let you see (and hear) for yourself J

Charles has graciously agreed to grant me an in-depth interview which I’ll be presenting in bits and pieces in the future. And of course I’ll talk about Andrew (his son) and the other friends he plays with. He’s got lots of artifacts from earlier performance years that he’s promised to share some with us – so there’ll be old pics and no telling what else! When I saw him at the Black Friday gathering at Grady Pennington’s last year (btw: tons of talented musicians jammin’ and having a blast!) he pointed out the bracelet he was wearing and told me my sister and a friend had given it to him when they were in high school! No telling what kinds of surprises we’re in for in the upcoming weeks.
Full song performances and interview in the next few weeks…here’s some ‘teasers’ til then!

Just when you thought ‘he’ would never open another super-cool, chilled down, hangout & restaurant….’he’ returns.
Everybody Loves ’Him’ and You’ll Love the Port o Call! The BEST part: it’s across the street from me!!!! He’s so cool…some friends caught a snapper last weekend and he cooked it for us along with some catfish and I am NOT kidding….it was the best I’ve ever had….EVER…he fried the catfish and grilled the snapper. It’s so cool being on the Brazos and feasting on it’s treasures…did you see my Facebook post about Scotties a month ago? The shrimpers couldn’t go out because of the pending storm and they bought 40 lbs. of rooster crabs over to Scotties to share with us – we had an impromptu crab boil and it was DEEElicious!
There’s so much going on around here this weekend I hardly know where to stop!
A few Note(ables)!
Saturday Night (7-2): Scotties Lounge in downtown Freeport is having a HUGE grand opening and DVD release party! Scotties will be showing the dvd from the 35 yr. reunion of the class of ’76 on a HUGE 16×16 outdoor screen in the backyard – under the stars in the Gulf breeze – and it is breezey back there folks (did you hear that Roy Crook?!) There will be some football footage, too! Midnite Blue Band (watch this viddy – they ROCK) will start rollin’ at 10:00. We’ll have the entire back lot for our party – all parking across the street (follow the signs). Bring your lawn chairs – we’re expecting a BIG crowd! There’ll be tons of food and Happy Hour til 8pm. Scotties serves iced cold beer (foreign and domestic), wine and setups (bring your favorite liquor)!
Midnite Blue’s Interview at Scotties and Performance Snippets from the great sounding “The Venue”
Half a block from Scotties on the same night (I’m gonna be busy!!) at The Venue in downtown Freeport is  a double header with Black Jack Davey (Blues, Rock) and Nightbird: Stevie Nicks Tribute Band. You could come out to Freeport and make it a triple header: visit with Capn’ Ken and party at The Venue and Scotties -lots to choose from and they’re all in walking distance of each other (less than 3 blocks)!
And Charles Farmer and Friends are going to be almost as busy as me this weekend :-) Appearing at The Venue in Freeport Friday Night and at Beach Bait and Tackle Sat. at 3:00. . Friday at The Venue with Charles, Mark Pepper and Andrew Farmer will be joining Charles. Mark will join Charles on Saturday at Bridge Bait but no two shows are ever alike – you never know who’s going to joing Charles and Friends!
Charles and Andrew with friends: Robert Miller and Django Walker.

See YOU on the Brazos This Weekend!

What do Pat Green, The Charlie Lucas Band and Sam Sliva and the Good have in common?

Answer: Read on….
If you stayed home last weekend…you missed a fantastic opportunity to experience some fine Texas musicians in your own backyard. I’ve never had too much fun (not counting most of my high school years and about 5 of the following) but last weekend I came close! In one evening, I heard the great pleasure of experiencing Pat Green and the Charlie Lucas Band at the Great Texas Mosquito Festival and Sam Sliva and the Good at The Venue in Freeport. Was I tired when I got in bed at 3:00 am? Nope – I was so pumped about what I’d seen and heard I hardly noticed the clock (or George’s snoring)!
I’d like to share a common element that makes each of these groups outstanding in their own unique way. Each band has a very effective ‘front man’. What’s a front man? Answer: A leader of a group of musicians; the most prominent member of the group; lots of times it’s the vocalist. I use the word effective as opposed to talented because I’ve seen lots of talented front men (and women!) who aren’t very effective…unfortunately. And I’ve seen lots of front people who aren’t especially talented but are very effective. The best front men (women) are effectively: engage fans, demand attention (don’t let their audience’s attention wander), generate excitement and give live audiences what they came for: a damn good time. Live performances are about an audiences’ personal experience with artists and their music. There’s no formula that states how to achieve engagement with an audience (I saw a band who never spoke a word to their audience win a $10,000 battle of the bands cash prize *), there’s only a rule that says: they must!
I’m going to share my observations about these artists and what makes their front men so effective – each in their unique way.
Pat Green: I smiled through the entire concert. Pat Green loves performing and engaging with fans…I felt it. His casual, easy command of the stage seems quite natural…and maybe it is…but he employs some classic tricks that keep audiences attention: lots of chatter and engagement with fans, SMILES!, lots of movement: around the stage with other musicians and several times to the front of stage to interact with fans, arm movement (I’m not suggesting anyone needs to be an air traffic controller, but it is effective); he waves them up and down, moves his guitar around with them, moves them to and away his guitar, he’s constantly in motion. Even when singing directly into a mic, he’s effectively scanning the audience with his head and eyes…constantly engaging with them. He’s a performance pro. Movement is important…music moves us…we dance, we sing, we clap, we cry to it, but we never stand still to it unless it’s the pledge of allegiance!
Pat Green never lets his audience’s attention wander
The Charlie Lucas Band’s front man (Charlie) is a lively performer that effectively interacts with other band members to bring us just the right mix of rock and roll thrill and country sizzle. I love it when Charlie yells: BECAUSE WE LOVE ROCK AND ROLL! I’m a country fan for sure but it was rock and roll that  worked crowds into fevered frenzies, made men, women (mostly) and children faint. And Charlie knows the crowd value of a popular cover song!

Sam Sliva from Austin (originally Bay City) has a different kind of effectiveness and presence. He’s relaxed and totally comfortable on stage physically…but his music is ‘tight’…perfect rhythm and dead on vocals. I appreciate Sam primarily from a musician’s viewpoint; He’s a musician’s musician. Sam engages his audience directly through his music. When I watch Sam Sliva and the Good, I focus primarily on Sam because he’s also the prominent presence…he’s the one that engages with other band members and the audience (humorous discourse between songs!) to create a lively feeling that accentuates his music. He’s a musician and a showman and I can’t wait to see Sam Sliva and the Good again!
