The Brazos is Buzzing!

Welcome to the Weekend On the Brazos! Our music scene is buzzzzzzzzzzzing this weekend and not just because of The Great Texas Mosquito Festival!  My calendar is expanding each week; I’m discovering lots of new places and artists and meeting so many groovy people along the way! Hope I get to see you out on the town soon!
Don’t you think Corky’s a good candidate for the Mosquito Legs Contest?!
BTW: In my ongoing efforts to keep our local music scene lively, I created a survey and sent it out to many of you. You can also go to my Facebook page: and complete it there. I’ll be discussing results with local bands and venue owners so we can keep our music lovers happy J
One of the wonderful things about blogging and social media is that it gives me a chance to bring music and video to you. On my calendar I embed links to venues and artists. If the artist has an online site that provides music, I post that link so you can hear them. It’s vital to the career of independent artists to take full advantage of the power of social media. A newspaper doesn’t provide us with the interactive experience of the web…I can’t hear a band’s music, watch them perform live or get an inside view (and friends opinions) of venues in a newspaper. But, I can go to any Facebook page and see what fans are saying about venues and bands, view videos, pics and hear the music. I can see who’s ‘checking in’, and what’s going on in the future. The more information a Facebook page (and website) provide, the better. Ever been to an artist or venue site on Facebook that has no music, no description, no pics and no interaction with fans? It doesn’t really generate excitement, does it? If you’re an artist or venue owner, I can set your Facebook page up with applications that play music, videos, send out event invitations, and integrate with 4 square to get the most out of social networking ‘check-in’ apps. I also provide websites, storefronts, all social networking hot spots (twitter, YouTube, etc.). Click here to see the specials I offer for July:
All setups come with a consultation and written guide about using the apps and I’m here if you need me! Sign up for my email newsletter you’ll get nifty updates and info about using social media and the internet for maximum benefit. You can also sign up for blog and newsletter through my fave way: RSS.
The mission for Jen on the Brazos: help the music scene on The Brazos grow and prosper – social media can provide us with the tools we need to get to know each other better…spread the good word about music in our area, and create prosperity for the musicians and venue owners who give us more of the music we love!
This weekend: The GREAT Texas Mosquito Festival is realizing its mission to bring great music to our area (its original intent) by bringing in country singer Pat Green (from Austin). I’ll be at the show filming and snapping shots of Pat, the Pirates and Charlie Lucas and the crowd to share with you later – see you there! Oh – if you see me struggling with my grandkids at the Mosquito Fest…feel free to give me a hand J

Enjoy one of my fave Pat Green tunes:
Songs About Texas
And his popular: Wave on Wave
Popular locals:  Intercoastal Pirates will be performing Saturday at 6:30. Found this little gem on YouTube – damn these guys sound good!
The Charlie Lucas Band will be servin’ up the Whiskey between the Pirates and Pat Green:

The Buzzzzz on The Brazos!

There’s only one good thing that can be said about the mosquito: The Great Texas Mosquito Festival in Clute, TX!
Great Texas Mosquito Festival: July 28-30, Clute Municipal Park
One of my favorite local festivals, the Mosquito Fest is known for it’s fantastic musical line-up; in keeping with tradition this year’s head-liner is country star: Pat Green! Saturday, July 30 at 11:00 pm. There’s lots of other talented acts to keep our toes tappin’ and fingers snappin’: Casey Donahue Band, Beyond Derringer, Intercoastal Pirates, Sourmash Band, and the Charlie Lucas Band (mini-mosquito calendar below).

Now’s a great time to subscribe to Jen’s music calendar of events – lots of choices: email, RSS, iCal (synchs with Outlook and your smart phone calendar – my favorite option). Jen’s mobile app is in the works, too! I love the iCal feature. I can click on any event on my smart phone and a new page pops up instantly with band name, music description, venues and links for more info (address, website, etc.). Makes for a handy festival calendar. There’s also a special announcement/invitation at bottom!

Belle’s Landing in East Columbia on the Brazos – Party Texas Style!

Wow! Looks like I couldn’t have picked a more exciting time to blog about the live music scene and interesting people along the Brazos! The newest member of our Brazos family is:

Belle’s Landing, located at Hwy. 35 @ the Brazos River – can’t miss it. Nestled among a beautiful pecan orchard is a refurbished 1929 barn that houses remarkable local artifacts and fun-lovin’ Texans. Folks – this joint is jumpin’!

1929 Barn with reclaimed wood siding accented by antique doors, transoms, windows and an interesting variety of local historical artifacts.
Plenty of Outside seating (and celebrating)!
Texans love being outdoors!
Entrance
Belle’s Landing celebrated it’s grand opening last weekend Sat., July 19 with hundreds of friends and local musical faves: Dog Town Blues who…

 performed from a loft-style bandstand – Surprise!

This is Texas style at its best. Acres of pecan trees that provide an abundance of shade, a cool breeze from the Brazos River bottom, rockin’Texas blues on a Saturday night…what’s not to love?!
I’ll be blogging lots more about this place (I haven’t even mentioned the paddlewheel yet!!) – in the meantime: enjoy the newest member of the Brazos family: Welcome Belle’s Landing!

Does Anyone Know a Good Rain Dance?!

I love being sun-drenched but I will never get used to the coast being sunny and dry. I’d like my lawn to be green…not crispy, thank you very much!
All this sweltering makes me extra thankful we’ve got lots of places to quench our thirsts and laugh and dance with friends. Now you can plan outings in advance: New Jen on the Brazos !Live! Scottie’s!
Back to speaking of friends and family…Scottie’s Lounge in Freeport officially opened with a bang on Wednesday June 29th. I dare you to go for an hour and not have fun! Scottie’s is the friendly neighborhood bar we’ve all been waiting for…where everybody knows your name…your mother’s name…your grandmother’s name, etc. It’s a hip, shorts and sandals, great tunes on the junkebox (from Hank Williams to Michael Jackson and everything in-between) kind of hang-out. And hang out you will…whether it’s inside at the lively bar, playing pool or relaxing in the cool Gulf breeze on the patio (yes…the patio is shaded and comfy)! You’ll never know who’ll drop in at Scottie’s.
Scottie’s was originally “Shorty’s” and has undergone ownership changes throughout it’s history. The current Captains are Kenny Kouches and Mike Jones; no strangers to the Freeport business scene (formerly of the Port Cafe). Everyone has memories and maybe even a story or two about Scotties; I belly-laughed listening to tales about life long friends last  weekend and am eagerly anticipating spending lots of happy hours at Scottie’s (pun intended)!
Pictures speak louder than words - these scream”Welcome”! Special note: the interior walls (and exterior door) are planked with wood salvaged from a fence that Kenny’s father built at his childhood home. There’s other fun ‘stuff’, too - Keywest style – where humor and the sea go hand in hand.
Have fun at Scottie’s – I’ll see you there!

Fun!
Aye Matie…Welcome to Scottie’s!

See you soon at Scottie’s!
Drop in at The Venue for live music entertainment, too! It’s half a block from Scottie’s and has great bands, roomy dancefloor, full bar, plenty of seating and the best ‘sound’ around. If you can’t have fun at Scotties and The Venue…I need to call an ambulance :-)
